I was privileged recently to be able to assist on the IVR stand at the European Tow Show. It was great to be able to meet fellow members and discuss the current issues the recovery industry face. The one thing that struck me was a lack of pessimism about the future. As is usual, some operators are very busy, while some are not, but there is an overall sense that the future is looking brighter.

Couple this with the commitment and drive that the new European Rescue and Recovery Initiative (ERRI) team has shown we can, if we all pull together, play a major part in moving this sector into the future and show our true professionalism.

That is as close to politics as I want to go but the fact is the Institute is inextricably linked to the political process. It has members that form part of the process and it administers the best National Training Scheme that the industry has ever had, with a common set of standards.

The next few years will not be easy but the industry can be assured that the Institute will work in its best interest, providing standards are not lowered just to achieve a compromise.

What the Institute needs to do more of is engage with employers on a wider scale. Many members of both the National Council and management board are employers but we need a wider view of what members want.  The standards were created using a wide range of industry members to obtain the best spectrum of ideas and requirements, but we need continual dialogue to ensure that what we provide is always relevant and of benefit to employers and employees alike.

So, we would like your feedback, good or bad. This will assist us in improving our systems, reviewing current standards and making recommendations to the skills council, Automotive Skills.

In the next few months it is hoped that the Institutes website will be updated and a feedback section added, but in the mean time please drop me an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . I will collate all the responses and provide the National Council and IVR (UK) Ltd management board with a full report.

Whether you think we are good or bad at what we do tell us, we cannot change without knowing why we need to!

Kind regards
